The Nigeria Police Force has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against violent crime, arresting 50 suspects linked to terrorism, kidnapping, and armed robbery in a series of nationwide operations.
At a press briefing held on April 13, 2026, at the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) headquarters in Abuja, police authorities disclosed that the operations led to the recovery of a large cache of weapons, including an anti-aircraft launcher and 17 rifles.
The operations, carried out by the FID-IRT, were described as a strategic offensive targeting criminal syndicates that have posed serious threats to national security. From January 2026 to date, police operatives have dismantled multiple criminal cells and recovered significant arms and equipment, including ammunition, communication devices, and stolen property.
Among the major breakthroughs was the dismantling of a 33-member gang allegedly involved in terrorism, cattle rustling, and a violent attack on a Christ Apostolic Church in Kwara State. The police also arrested key suspects linked to the killing of three officers attached to the Donga Divisional Headquarters in Taraba State.
In the Federal Capital Territory and surrounding areas, the Force said it disrupted criminal networks involved in “one-chance” abductions, car burglaries, and illegal checkpoint operations, leading to further arrests and recoveries.
In a related development, operatives acting on intelligence arrested a 25-year-old suspect, Nasiru Ibrahim, in Benue State. He was found in possession of an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and eight rounds of live ammunition. Investigations revealed alleged links to a wanted bandit identified as Janari, who is believed to have supplied the weapon. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the suspect and other members of the syndicate.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to enhancing national security, noting that the successes highlight ongoing efforts to combat crime and ensure justice.
Police authorities added that several suspects are ready for prosecution, while investigations continue to track down other accomplices and recover more illegal arms.
The Force reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, emphasizing the use of both human and technical intelligence in tackling criminal activities across the country.
